Bekannt wurde Bates in den 1980er Jahren als Keyboarder und Komponist der legendären „Loose Tubes“, eine ideale Spielwiese für dessen hochkomplexe, aber immer auch witzige und aberwitzige Kompositionen. Nicht weniger abenteuerlustig sind die Charlie-Parker- Interpretationen seines Trios Belovèd. Professuren bringen Bates u.a. nach Kopenhagen und schließlich nach Bern, wo er seit 2011 unterrichtet.
